The Salomon family immigrated to Israel about 12 years ago. Their youngest son was born in Tiberias a short time after they immigrated and the Bris took place in the house of Rabbi Darli, a local person involved in communal activities.

The family had great difficulties in acclimatizing to Israel and this led to a deterioration of the father’s mental state. At one point he ran around the house brandishing a knife and threatened to harm his children miraculously did not harm anyone. The father was committed to various psychiatric institutions where he still resides.

At the same time the economic situation of the family significantly deteriorated and they suffered from hunger and privation. The mother, Rivka Shoshana, lived with her own mother and four children in abject poverty. The grandmother does not know Hebrew.

As the situation worsened, Rivka Shoshana fell sick due to malnutrition. The children went daily to a local welfare organization which gave them double portions of food, realizing that they would not have dinner either. However the mother and grandmother remained hungry and the children failed to report her dolorous situation.

When the mother’s health condition became perilous, her daughter realized she should summon help but didn’t know who to turn to. She finally found Rabbi Darli after searching everywhere for him. When he arrived at the home, he was shocked to see the total neglect, poverty and empty refrigerator. He hurried to help and ordered an ambulance to take the mother to hospital but it was too late. Her condition was too severe and despite all the efforts of the doctors, she passed away at the age of 40, with the death certificate stating that she died of malnutrition!

The four children and grandmother are currently in Rabbi Darli’s home, eating “like children after the Holocaust” as he describes them and in need of great help.

To assist the remaining family members, a fund has been set up at https://www.kupat.org.il/views/DonationPage?pid=823&recid=0

It is unbelievable that today in a Jewish country this could happen.

Israel needs to do better to care for their impoverished.

Baishanim, Rachamim, Gomlei Chasadim cannot let this happen.

There is a need for the frum community to do something about dysfunction which is a cause of many serious problems in the frum community. This issue can not be brushed under the rug.
