JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The government is expected to discuss Sunday a bill allowing Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to order the IDF not to conscript chareidi yeshiva students until a new draft law has been legislated. The deadline of July 1st is fast approaching and the government has not yet legislated a new law in accordance with the coalition agreement, leaving the yeshiva students in illegal status and subject to forcible draft.

The new bill will also contain a declaration that the government intends to legislate a new draft bill in the winter session which will include a clause providing special benefits for soldiers and for combat soldiers, intended to weaken the public criticism for chareidi draft exemptions.

Earlier this month the chareidi parties demanded that prime minister Netanyahu begin legislation of a new framework for exemptions in the current Knesset session. The coalition agreement stated that the law was supposed to pass in conjunction with the budget but due to the fear of anti-government protests, Netanyahu asked to postpone legislation until after the budget had passed. Netanyahu told the chareidi leaders that the legislation would be delayed and the government would make a declaration of intent regarding the winter session.

The current bill will allow the Defense Minister to order the IDF not to draft chareidim until after a new law is submitted.

The struggle between Secular Zionism and Torah Judaism is the kulturkampf that began in Herzl’s (ym”sh) time. At least in the beginning of the Medina there was an agreement of draft exemptions for Yeshiva and Kollel students. The Israel Supreme Court (zol ligen in drerd) negated that a while back, but due to the political coalitions, B”H it has not been possible to implement, and it won’t be implemented. Maybe for a short while there will be 300,000 yeshiva students learning in jail. In that manner the Medina will support the yeshivas. I think President Isaac Herzog is a decent fellow and he will pardon them all! The Secularists must wake up and accept they have lost the kulturkampf!
