JERUSALEM (VINnews) — During a Knesset law committee session discussing the cancellation of the ‘reasonability’ clause which gives judges authority to strike down laws and political decisions due to their ‘lack of reasonableness’, Labor leader Merav Michaeli spoke derisively about the Tanach.

Michaeli said that “One of the basic values of a democracy is that everyone is equal in the law. This is what distinguishes a democracy from a monarchy, from things which were prevalent in the Middle Ages , or by you in the Tanach, that the government must be beholden to the law.”
In response, Heritage Minister Rabbi Amichai Eliyahu quoted the first prime minister of Israel, David Ben Gurion, who said that “in my meetings with statesmen in Washington I was impressed with their admiration for ‘what appears in your bible.’

Michaeli’s statement also demonstrated her ignorance of Tanach, which clearly demonstrates how kings were always obligated to the laws of the land.
