People have been sleeping on cardboard and using umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun.
“I could not register and they aren’t going to help,” Fofana Hamed, from Ivory Coast, said in Spanish. “I’ve been here five days without grooming or showering.”
New York City is legally required to provide shelter to anyone who requests it and the Legal Aid Society is threatening to file a lawsuit, since the city appears to be failing to meet its obligation, considering that people are sleeping on the streets.
“The federal government could also solve the problem tomorrow by allowing people to work,” Joshua Goldfein of the Legal Aid Society said.
The hotel is both an arrival center for migrants where they can get access to vaccines, food and other resources — and a humanitarian relief center for families with children. (Apparently the one thing it is not–is a hotel.)
Most of the people waiting in line have been single men, waiting in line to register for shelter on sidewalks winding around the hotel’s block at 46th and Vanderbilt.
“They don’t allow them to go anywhere, no shower, no bathroom,” one person said.

Omar Sall, who said he was persecuted in Senegal, said he’s been sleeping on the sidewalk for three days.
“We need somewhere to sleep, to shower, to pray,” he said. “But America is good. We like the country.”
