JERUSALEM (VINnews) — In a shocking burglary and vandalizing of the Georgian community’s shul in Ashdod, the Aron Kodesh was smashed and a Sefer Torah thrown to the ground and torn. The burglar also stole a sum of money which was hidden in the Aron Kodesh.

The burglary occurred Wednesday night. Apparently the burglar was searching for money and while doing so threw items out of the Aron Kodesh and broke parts of it. It is unclear as yet who the burglar was and police have opened an investigation into the matter. A police statement said that “Investigators and crime scene experts are gathering clues and findings in order to determine the identity of the suspect and bring about his arrest.”

Worshipers arriving at the shul found Torah scrolls that had been defaced and extensive property damage to the synagogue and the furniture within.

This is the second serious incident of vandalism in the same area, after a special education kindergarten was vandalized over the weekend. The worshipers who came to the place cried tears.

“Who would have believed that the shul would look like this,” they said, wondering if this was the result of the incitement that has recently been voiced against the Torah-observant community.

The Georgian community in Israel numbers some 150,000 people, and the Ashdod community is one of the larger contingents of the community in Israel.

Not rocket science to have a locked, fire proof and burglar proof aron, and good quality video surveillance cameras going 24 7 around the Shule. Duh
