PARIS — A 77-year-old Jewish man was brutally attacked on Saturday, around 7:30 a.m., as he left a mikvah in the Île-de-France region.

The victim, identified as Gilles Cohen, said he was assaulted from behind, beaten repeatedly for nearly five minutes, and subjected to antisemitic slurs including “dirty Jew.” His attacker also tried to rob him, demanding money, keys, or the synagogue’s address before fleeing.
Cohen, who was wearing a hat marking him as visibly Jewish, told i24NEWS the assault highlights the danger Jews face in the Paris suburbs. For security reasons, he declined to reveal the precise location of the attack.
Authorities have not yet announced an arrest. Security around synagogues and religious sites has since been reinforced, as antisemitic incidents in France continue to surge — up nearly 300% since 2023, according to official reports.
Jewish leaders say the attack underscores growing fear among France’s half-million Jews, the largest Jewish community in Europe.
