Los Angeles – Some residents and the Chabad of North Hollywood are fighting over a new synagogue. Many say the reason is size, some say it’s anti-Semitism.

The four-year battle is taking place in a Sherman Oaks neighborhood that includes million-dollar homes and the synagogue, which has been there since 1981.
The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/Mnm5Oi) says the half-built synagogue is nine times bigger than the old one.
An appeals court ruled in August that the City Council abused its discretion and ordered lawmakers to bolster decisions about the building. The council will get the matter back later this month.
The Chabad is one in a string of disputes between Orthodox Jewish communities and neighbors who say the synagogues violate residential zoning laws.
A rabbi involved in one dispute says he blames anti-Semitism.
The ehrliche yidden of North Hollywood are entitled to a shul of ANY size they want. This is California where “size does matter”.
No! They can’t change their rulings midstream. If its approved than, it should be too late.
What is permitted as of right under the local zoning?
I used to daven at that shul when I would visit LA. Every year the congregation would be increase. They tore down walls and built a tent to accommodate new people. Rabbi Abend does things legally.
The neighbors had a chance to voice their opinion when the new building was proposed. They did; they lost. New building DO offend people, and progress does sometimes get in the way, but here, the shul definitely needs a new building.
why do they need a shul? so charly Sheen (Harper) can have where to daven?
or his brother Allen? or Jake or Rose or Berta?
Court said that this shul was unlawfully approved by the city council. Chabad is a fine neighbor but the laws do apply here. We like neighbors who daven so the Rabbi will have to tone down his rhetoric.
