Monticello, NY – The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe filed a lawsuit against U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, who had denied last week the tribe's land trust application for a casino at Monticello Raceway.

Kempthorne denied the tribe's application because the proposed casino was not within commutable distance from the Mohawk's reservation on the New York/Canada border. The tribe's lawsuit said Kempthorne cannot apply this previously unexpressed concern without giving them "fair notice and the opportunity to comment."
As for the distance and how it would affect reservation life, the Mohawks were quick to remind that many in their tribe were ironworkers who built the skyline of New York City. [Record]
