Brooklyn, NY – City Gives Landlords With Extensive Violations Ultimatum

Brooklyn, NY – The city will make $4 million worth of repairs on 113 buildings with extensive violations if the landlords don’t fix them first.

The landlords have until March to make the repairs before the city does the work and fines the landlords by putting liens against the buildings.

The landlords of the 113 crumbling Brooklyn buildings have refused to make the repairs, which has forced the city to spend more than $4 million on the fixes.

The 113 dwellings made the city’s list of the 200 worst apartment buildings across New York – and they are still in bad shape, said officials and the unlucky tenants.

HPD spokesman Seth Donlin said landlords will have to reimburse the city for the work.
He conceded it takes time to collect the money, but insisted the city usually gets back 90 cents for every dollar spent on emergency repairs because HPD places a lien on those properties .

The disproportionately high number of Brooklyn buildings in disrepair is due at least in part to a large number of old wood frame homes that need more maintenance than brick and brownstone houses, HPD officials said.

Last month, HPD came out with a new list of apartment buildings that need work – and 120 new Brooklyn dwellings made the cut. The landlords have until March to fix the violations and pay up old fines before the city steps in.

Perhaps they should do something about THEIR OWN buildings too – all the NYCHA housing blocks that have hundreds of violations.

Why doesn’t the city relocate these tenants and pull the CofO on the building until repaired and then let the owner rent the apartments. Could it be the city would prefer doing overpriced work and billing repairs???

i think brooklyn has alot more than 113 buildings in to be worried about the average building needs to be remodeld (remodeld being an understatement) the avreage building in brooklyn is old,led and mold infested and rat infested.. its unhealthy and inhuman to have people living like this… the city should higher the code for inspection and require remodling

90 cents for a dollar? lol! the HPD and the DOH and all govt agencies apply a high interst rate of an average 18 percent daily on any unpaid charges!!
besides, on a job that you would normally pay 1000 dollars, they’d charge you 5000 or 10,000. and up . plus the high interest. they make a wealth out of it.
Hope those landlords have their minds in place, and do the repairs themselves, before the “legal thieves” rip their shoulders off.

not to justify bad or irresponsible landlords, many of those typical violations are based on a so called “tip” of a bad or vicious tenant, usually those free loaders like the rent controlled or those who simply don’t pay rent. and “all you have to do”, is convince the authorities that you don’t have no violations, just don’t forget the time, money and aggrevation involved in each incident.
A lot of times those tips prove to be false and total lie, I’ve had a personal experience in my house, there was never a problem, everything was fixed same day, no pests, updated electric, painted every 2 years. and still one snake tenant managed to get me a hard time, and “all I had to do” was hiring lawyers and run down to ECB or DOH to prove that I’m right.

    Another Bloomberg robbery move.
    .
Genius idea to rob the people of NYC.
When the problem is his like fixing NYC elevators that’s not important.
Let me come in and fix that then charge the city or put a lien like they do to others.

Nothing matters, Landlords are responsible to keep their houses in proper condition. The tenants are not allowed to complain for anything, but the landlords are allowed to let the tenants live in a dump yard. The tenant may withold rent if the landlord does not fix what’s necessary. Landlords need to fix plumbing, heating stair railings, inside and outside steps, and even change the light bulbs. All these Brooklyn landlords shouldn’t complain. They are getting away easily because if the tenant reports them they are a musser and the landlord has a right ??? to evict them.

We are lucky to have a mayor like Bloomberg who cares about the little people enough to enact policies helpful to tenants who fall victim to the powerful landlord groups. Other mayor have succomed to the influetial landlord lobbies.

    Stop whining ! !!!
let the city stop stealing from the landlords by revoking all rent control and rent stabilized laws and I’ll fix every single violation on the property .
But no you have rent control tenants paying $96 dollars a month for an apartment that’s worth $2000 and rent stabilized people paying $500 a month and who are these tenants either old people that have nothing to do with their time so all they do is sit on the phone with every agency availible and report on every tile in the bathroom that is crooket ect. or you have people living on welfare with nothing to do so they do the same YOU ARE A BUNCH OF LAZY GOOD FOR NOTHINGS LIVING FOR FREE IN A SOCIALIST “SEDOM” CITY THAT SPREADS THE WEALTH AROUND YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT YOU HAVE A ROOF ON YOUR HEAD .
Don’t get me started I manage alot of buildings in nyc the tenants that complain are the ones making the damage to the property and then they call the HPD to report the problem so they wont even have to pay the lousy 500 dollars that they pay and can really live rent free .
the nyc housing court is the most pro tenant place in the world where if you actually know the system well enough you can live rent free .
And all the city is doing the past couple of years is raising everthing taxes water electric and handing out hefty fines for the smallest violations .
And don’t start counting the money i made i worked very hard and paid alot of taxes on it as well, which went to….
and let the city and his honor baloonberger stop telling me how to maintain my property because lets take a look how the buildings that the city manages look like and the reason is the same its a bunch of bored welfare animals destroying the buildings .
Go get a job and buy your own house if we’re such bad people and that should solve all your problems and stop living on other peoples chesban!!!
