Police say Robert Scheurer was arrested on a charge of reckless endangerment. It wasn’t clear if he had a lawyer who could comment.

Authorities say the off-duty Suffolk County police officer was driving eastbound when he struck a van in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway in West Islip just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The van caught fire and its unidentified driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scheurer remains hospitalized with serious injuries and will be arraigned at a later date. Additional charges may be forthcoming.

Police say the officer was assigned to the Third Precinct and has been suspended without pay.

In 2002, an off duty FBI Agent was driving the wrong way on I-95, near Ft. Lauderdale, at night. He was intoxicated, and as a result, he killed two young Haitian men. However, when the cops initially investigated, they tried to make it look, as if the Haitians were at fault. Even the FBI came to the local police precinct to show support for their drunk agent. The agent almost got away with vehicular homicide. Eventually, he was arrested, indicted, tried, convicted, and sent to jail. He was also thrown out of the FBI. For some reason, law enforcement officers at the federal, state, county, and municipal level, feel that they can break the law with impunity, and get away with it. However, it didn’t happen in the case on Long Island, or in the case in Florida.
