Israel – Safed’s leading rabbi, Shmuel Eliyahu, has issued a halachic ruling that men are forbidden to dress as women, since the injunction “neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment’ (Deuteronomy 22:5) is valid also during the Purim holiday.

In response to a question sent as a text message, the rabbi noted that some authorities exclude children under the age of 13 from this injunction or permit the wearing of one women’s garment, but said that those who follow the ruling strictly will be blessed.
The question and answer will be published in the synagogue bulletin, “Olam Katan” (“small world”).
100% right people think that the torah takes vacation on purim in my shul if a boy walks in dressed as a lady or girl I send them out
Shoin vidder busy mit azelecheh vichtige issues….
I think it should be published in Moach Katan not in olam Katan
If “ein aseh docheh lo sa’aseh”, then kal va’chomer that “ein minhag docheh lo sa’aseh”.
I thought it was assur to text?
Text message! He dosent have a kosher phone? This must be purim torah! Mitzvah Ha’Ba Be’Aveira
So this Rabbi has the power to pass halachic rulings that hundreds of others have to obey, but yet he has no elementary skills to search through Talmudic texts that allow it for Purim celebration?
Of course he paskened this way. Rav Shmuel shlit”a is a sefardi, so he paskens like the Shulchan Aruch; why is anyone surprised by that? The Ramo disagrees, and says it’s OK on Purim, and Rav Shmuel would be the first to agree that Ashkenazim can rely on that.
Yups!
The shilchon orich a lowes for men to dress like women on puriem!
Amazing how ignorant people could be, RAv Eliyahou is the son of the former SEPHARDIC chief Rabbi. Many Sephardic Poskim held the same way including the Shulchan Aruch. The Rema argues.
No boy in Manhattan Beach dresses up as a woman on Purim.
what’s going on in Israel? every Rabbi exports Hallchas that is written in all Sifrei Haposkim. They think we r all Am Haratzim.
is it ok for me to dress up like my shviger? yesh la efsher seemonei ish. is that included in issur of dressing like a woman? or is a shviger a berya bifnei atzmoi? tzorich iyun
After reading this, I have decided that I will dress up as Michelle Obama this purim. I’m going to be the First Lady with a beard and tzitzis.
Some people have no taste. Why dress children as nuns?
As several posters have said, the rav should learn a yiddeshe vert such as the shulchan aruch which clearly mutars such varbeshe dress for men on purim and only purim
Old News…the lubavitcher Rebbe Said that years ago!!! Hop on the band wagon Yidden!!
odd picture not sure they should dress like nuns
In a discussion of halacha, there should be no personal attacks or snide remarks.
A rav reportedly said something… Maybe what was reported was unreliable? YNet loves stories that poke fun at our faith. Even if he was quoted accurately, does that justify the snide and sarcastic remarks, above?
how about the reverse, can a woman dress as a man on purim with pants?
did he say anything about smoking on purim?
I just don’t get it. Why we would want to be cross-dressers anyways? How is this a costume?
He paskened that it is mutar but better to be machmir. Why are you all talking about this as if he said asur????
What does “should avoid” mean? Does that mean if you MUST, it’s ok? Or are you just making up chumros? Is it allowed or not?
Amaratzim…since when is a Chacham not allowed to make pasak Torah according to his Sephardic tradition…do you think kitniyos are chametz too? A Frieliche, safe and Shomer Mitzvos Purim to one and all.
There’s no reason for boys (or men) to be humiliated and emasculated by dressing as women. Alot of unsophisticated people pass as authority figures, one on every streetcorner and podium. Children/Youth can have plenty of fun without gender-bending politics or adult manias. For an adult to be a transvestite is totally different. Young people function in a primal world of peers and need encouragement not controversy.
i konw its fun to dress up on purim ,but why a nun ?its not funny
since when do yidishe children put their hands together like these “nuns”? Terrible
