New York – Senator Daniel Squadron fought for legislation that would honor the memory of 5-year-old Joel Englender and prevent future tragedies like the one that took his life. The bill was introduced by State Senator Martin Golden.

Squadron was the top Democratic cosponsor of the bill, which requires trucks to have crossover (“convex”) mirrors to remove their blind spots while operating in New York City. It overwhelmingly passed the Senate on Monday (reported here at VIN) and will now move to the Assembly.
Joel Englender was killed May 12 by a delivery truck while riding his tricycle in Williamsburg. The driver says he never saw the child.

we do not need more regulations from government

some regulations are worthwhile and some are not. This is a fairly unintrusive measure that is designed to save lives. The state government has jurisdiction over auto safety and are responsible for the free flow of traffic and the safety of pedestrians.
