Washington – The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service is raising rates for its more profitable express mail and priority mail shipping next year, part of its efforts to stave off bankruptcy.

The new prices take effect Jan. 22 and include the introduction of a new flat rate of $39.95 for express mail boxes, with separate increases for letters. Previously, prices were $13.25 or higher based on package weight and distance.
The Post Office said the rate hikes still make its shipping the best value compared to private companies such as UPS and FedEx.
The new prices amount to a roughly 5 percent increase. They are in addition to a previously announced 1-cent hike in first-class mail to 45 cents. The independent Postal Regulatory Commission will review the proposed hikes before they take effect.
Fools! My ups rates keep getting better, now I ship everything 3 lbs and up via ups. At this rate ill start shipping ups for 2 lbs too. The more ups we ship, the lower our rates are
gurnisht helfen ! they could charge 5$ for a first class letter up to an ounce and still lose money.and the government claims it can handle healthcare ? anything government gets involved with loses money !

Sorry to hear, we have top tier negotiated ups rates, the higher my ups bill, the more my rates go down, usps may be cheaper for 1 and 2 pounds, but the 2 pound gap is closing in
elchonon just becasue you have negotiated rates doesnt mean it doesnt go up. yes if you buy more it will cost less per box but now it wont cost just as much less as it did. Also USPS has negotiated rates as well on Express and Priority. Not saying that USPS knows what they are doing but just for your info.
