New York City’s Transit Union Announces Citywide Strike

    The New York City’s Transport Workers Union Local 100 President, Roger Touissant has announced that the entire NYC Transit System all 30,000 New York City transit workers are on strike effective immediately, after failing to reach a deal with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority following days of bitter labor talks, shutting down nation’s largest public transit system.

    Yes, Penn Station at 7th Ave and 31st St has been closed due to a very large crowd at the LIRR entrance

    i just heard unconfirmed reports that police are closing the entrance to RIRR on 34 st 7th ave, because of crowed conditions

    BROADWAY S/B FROM THE 150’S TO 96TH STREET. INTERIOR S/B AVENUES ARE JAMMED AND GRIDLOCKED. THE HOV-4 RESTRICTION WAS JUST LIFTED AT 11AM. FYI: THERE ARE NO RESTRICTIONS FOR THE AFTERNOON COMMUTE. THE SAME HOV-4 RULES WILL GO BACK IN PLACE TOMORROW 5AM-11AM UNLESS THE MTA TRANSIT STRIKE ENDS

    10AM: Mayor Mike Bloomberg is scheduled to hold a news conference on the transit strike.

    11AM: the city and MTA will appear in Brooklyn Federal Court to argue before a judge on an new injunction request. They are seeking a restraining order to force the union to halt its strike and return to work ,and to have heavy fines levied against the TWU.

    Jose Padilla, 34, said he and fellow Coca-Cola employees are meeting at 4 a.m. to come up with a plan to put more workers in trucks to ensure their product gets delivered in the case of a strike.

    “We have to get the Coke to the people,” Padilla said. “Just because there is a strike, people don’t stop drinking coke.”

    Mayor Bloomberg is walking over the Brooklyn Bridge at this time from staying overnight at the OEM headquarters in Brooklyn to his office in City Hall, a group of protesters are waiting on the Manhattan side of the bridge, news and NYPD choppers above

    As of 5:00 this morning PD set up check-points to check all vehicles coming/crossing south of 96th Street of the city to have 4 or more passengers, exempt are busses, paratransport, commuter vans and motorcycles.
    All commercial vehicle are prohibited from entering Manhattan south of 96th Street Monday to Friday 5AM – 11AM
