Airmont, NY – There’s hardly a break in traffic on a weekday morning at Route 59 and Airmont Road, lanes fill quickly at all corners. Turning semis squeak past stopped cars, clearing them by what appears to be inches.
The intersection, which county Highway Department officials view as one of the busiest in Rockland, just might get busier. Plans for a new retail shops are coming closer to fruition as the developer moves toward site-plan approval from Airmont’s Planning Board. Nearly 20,000 square feet of retail space is planned on two lots adjacent to a 13,900-square-foot strip mall on the north side of Route 59.

One building is proposed east of the existing shopping center, on a vacant lot, and another north of it, where a medical office will be razed. No decisions have been made on the types of businesses that will occupy the new buildings – one 12,391 square feet and the other 7,474 square feet.

Nearly 30,000 vehicles approach the intersection daily on North Airmont Road, and 18,200 travel between the corner and downtown Suffern, according to county and state figures.
