The roughly 8-foot-wide pit swallowed most of the rear left wheels of the school bus as the vehicle was passing River Road and Henley Avenue and the rear of the vehicle bottomed out. The 35 first- through seventh-graders onboard were on their way to the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey in River Edge. Neither the driver nor any of the students was injured.

The children, dressed in costumes for Purim, got off the bus through the rear door. They waited inside Wine & Roses, a florist and gift shop, for another bus to take them to school.
Florist employee Diane Kelly said the students appeared "shaken up and scared." A few were crying and said they wanted their parents or to get to school. A woman who answered the phone at the yeshiva said, "I'm afraid it's our policy not to comment on anything." [NorthJersey.com]
