Captain Richard Paris and his employer — Shoreline Cruises — entered their guilty pleas this morning in Warren County Court in Queensbury. Shoreline is based in the village of Lake George and is owned by James Quirk.
Paris and Shoreline were charged with misdemeanor counts of violating navigation law in connection with the sinking of the Ethan Allen on October second, 2005.

Forty-seven people from Michigan and Ohio were taking a fall foliage tour when the boat capsized on a calm day. Paris and 27 of the passengers survived.
Under state navigation law, a second crew member should have been along for the one-hour tour, and a federal investigation found that the boat was overloaded.

Paris and the company were each fined $250 dollars and Paris was ordered to serve more than 200 hours of community service. [AP]

I don’t know what he did wrong, but basically he screwed up by doing something that could’ve have happened to anyone else in the business. The real penalty is the 200 hours of community service. Not the $250.

Well $10 would have been an insult. $12.50 sounds a bit more reasonable.
