    Monticello , NY — Police believe someone deliberately caused a crane to fall at a construction site on Dunbar Road

    Police said the crane’s brake drum was covered in oil and the brake mechanism was bound with wire so it could not engage.
    “It looks like it was done intentionally,” Monticello police Chief Doug Solomon said. “It wasn’t done by kids — this is somebody who went in there and knew the inner workings of a crane.”

    The FBI might help with the investigation because the crane’s owner, Dave Auringer, has been threatened during projects in New York City and Westchester County. Solomon said the threats were rooted in union versus non-union disputes. Auringer is a non-union employer. Bus Solomon does not believe union picketers at the site are involved.

    The construction is for a project called Dunbar Towers, a 92-unit luxury condo complex that will stand seven stories high. [Record]
