The areas affected have included Milwaukee, Wis.; La Crosse, Wis.; Chicago; and Lincoln, Ill. The person started sending reports in mid-April through an online form on the service’s Web site.
Tom Schwein, chief of the National Weather Service’s systems and facilities division for the central region, said the person submitting the alerts seems to know about severe weather reports.
He said the person usually submits the false reports when severe weather is already present, which makes it more believable.
Schwein said investigators have traced the Internet protocol address of the faker’s computer. He said the FBI is helping subpoena records to figure out who is registered for the computer IP address. [wisc]
Oh, so THAT’S why it’s raining with no warning from the weathermen.
As opposed to the regular Weatherman, that get the weather right a 1/3 of the time?!?!? Let the FBI check out those guys !!
