The public gallery in Hertsmere Borough Council’s chamber was packed with people waiting to hear the decision on whether 34 sets of poles joined by wire can be put up around the town to create an eruv.
Once the poles are put up, there will be a zone in which Orthodox Jews can carry out tasks which are usually prohibited during the Sabbath, such as carrying or pushing.
The groups that are usually opposed to the implementation of an
“ERUV” system (without pre-judging
the present situation)include, some
alienated (disconnected) people of Jewish descent, and, on the other
end of the spectrum, some intellectually dishonest community leaders.
