Clipper Equity wants to spend $1.3 billion to buy the 140-acre affordable housing haven that houses 12,000 people.
But the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development told Clipper in a letter today that it doesn't believe that the company would be able to preserve the affordable housing in the development in the long term.
At the Brooklyn complex, about 2,000 tenants pay up to $1,200 in rent under the state's Mitchell-Lama program. [AP]
