Manhattan, NY – Port Authority officials have been distributing surveys asking drivers if they would pay as much as $30 to take a special lane through the Hudson River crossing that would cut their commute by 20 to 50 minutes.

Officials are exploring reconfiguring the inbound lanes through the 1-1/2-mile tunnel from Route 495 to create a new “High Occupancy/Toll,” or HOT, lane.
E-ZPass commuters would be charged a pricier fee on top of the standard $4 toll to use the HOT lane, officials said.
But PA officials are reserving the option of jacking up the price to use the breezier lane on days when the other lanes are clogged with heavier than usual traffic.
In a survey passed out at toll booths this week and mailed to E-ZPass customers, the PA asks commuters if they would pay $15 more to make their commute 20 minutes shorter, or an additional $30 to shave up to 50 minutes off the drive.
Drivers also were asked if they would dole out an extra $12.50 to cut their tunnel drive time by 10 minutes. [Daily News]
