Developers CPC Resources and Isaac Katan unveiled plans for up to 2,400 new condos and apartments – along with 220,000 square feet of new retail, commercial and community space – at the former Domino plant on the burgeoning Williamsburg waterfront. The development team said the brick facade of the plant’s iconic main refinery would be preserved although its trademark Domino Sugar sign could be moved, but the developer is still exploring ways how to preserve the famous sign.

The 11.2-acre project off Kent Avenue just north of the Williamsburg Bridge would also include four towers 30 to 40 stories high on the East River waterfront and two low-rise buildings across Kent Avenue. The site plan incorporates four acres of public park space along the riverfront, including a central gathering place along the river behind the refinery.
Thirty percent of the project – called the “New Domino” – is being set aside for middle-income housing.

But not everyone is happy. Many want to see the entire complex preserved – not just the main refinery – and believe the project is too much for the area to handle. “The density is outrageous, it is just adding to the gentrification of the area and there is no way the infrastructure is going to be able to accommodate all these new people,” said Stephanie Eisenberg, who lives across the street in a building where a 50-by-100-foot “SAVE DOMINO” sign hangs.
