New York, NY – Weight-loss stomach-surgery patients have a higher death rate – including suicide – than the general population, researchers said yesterday.

Dr. Bennet Omalu and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh reviewed more than 16,000 bariatric operations done in Pennsylvania over a nine-year period.

“Most [suicides and drug overdoses] occurred at least one year after surgery,” Omalu noted in The Archives of Surgery, “suggesting [a need for] careful follow-up.” [nypost]

    re: 9:35
firstly I am not skinny–I wish I were.
secondly I know people who have had bariatric surgery done.
thirdly you misunderstood my point which was if you don’t take care of the underlying reason SOME people overeat is for emotional issues. If that isn’t handled properly (and bariatric surgery or looking thin when you don’t feel good inside doesn’t take care of the underlying issue) then it can lead to severe problems!

There are more people dying from a affects of obesity than post surgery suicide.

9:35 – do you honestly believe that there is a connection b/w emotional overeating and suicide? c’mon. THINK A LITTLE!! I could tell you’re a skinny person.

But, having done some research on the issue (you guessed it – I’m fat) there is no knews in this one.

All books and websites I’ve read tell you that one of the side effects of losing weight very quickly might be depression. That’s because the body (hormones, chemicals…..) is not used to have so little nourishment and needs to adjust to that. The weightloss is sometimes too quick and the body can’t adjust quickly enough.

And depression, if not properly treated, can lead to suicide, lo alainu.

So, do you get it now? It’s not ’emotional eating’ that causes suicide. It’s the depression.

emotional overeating is a common problem. if you only deal with the weight issue the emotional issue still remains. No surprises here.
