The Assembly voted 71-7 to approve a bill banning sales of the toy, a liquid-filled rubber ball attached to a rubbery, sticky cord.

The Senate approved the bill in March, so it needs only Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s signature to become law.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has found there is a potential risk of strangulation from the toy. It found the stretchy cord of the toy can wrap around a child’s neck when the child swings the toy overhead like a lasso. From 2002 to 2006, the commission found 290 incidents in which the cord wrapped around a child’s neck, including 16 in which someone lost consciousness.[ap]
