Brooklyn, NY – The Muslim student who came to the aid of several young Jewish adults physically assaulted in an anti-Semitic attack while riding the New York City Q train during Chanukah, now battles Muslim ambivalence. Some in the Muslim community are unsure if his actions are consistent with Islam.

According to the president of the Queens-based Tri-State Muslim, there is some ambivalence about it."There are some in our community who are not too sure that what Hassan did was really Islamic," said Salaudeen Nausrudeen.

Nausrudeen said that several people who attended a Dec. 21 event in Queens, "made clear that they did not agree with Hassan's brave act.
One Arab man said to Askari: "I applaud your courage in doing what you did. But I myself would never save a Jew." But Askari said he responded, "I will help anyone in need, no matter what his religion. At the end of the day, we are all human beings and that is what matters." Askari added: "It is sad to see that some people are so short-sighted.

Nausrudeen said, If more people have a chance to hear his message, it will help to change their way of thinking. [jewishweek]

Whether a yid is allowed to be moser nefesh for a goy isn’t the issue, because it’s also not the issue whether a Muslim is allowed to risk his life to save a yid.

The real issue is that Muslims are killing yidden; forget about saving our lives in the subways.

Zalmenowitz did NOT know that the building was going to collaps then and there…
He had air to breath, so a Jew with a heart of gold did not think much but just did what was right and stayed behind to help a friend.
I’m sure he thought that eventually he would be rescued.
(This fact does not take away from his great title HERO in the least bit!)
He did what others did not and that was to care for a friend in need before himself!

    Rabbosai:

I pray that the majority of people we are making peace with in the Middle East are more similar to Hasan than to his detractors.

Hopefully, the majority of the Muslim’s are similar to Hassan so that we will have real peace.

If the majority in the Muslim community are like Hasan’s detractors we are in big trouble.

I know what you all are thinking:
    Yes Happy Dreams.
But…. Hey… you never know. With my sincere apologies to NY Lotto

my friends wake up and smell the coffee
the true sentiments are the rule
this individual is just an exception being this is the case we must constantly be on guard
even the inoccent looking store front muslim prayer pit stop should be kept under survelince as we see from this candid statement by the head of so called peacful loving religious moslems
its a short distance between not saving a jew being killed and doing the killing yourself
im under the impression that in this great country of ours being present during a crime makes you an accessory and should the crime be murder your an accessory to murder and liable to the full extent of the law
anyone not caring to abide by the laws of this great country particularly when infringing on other peoples lives are welcome to leave
but this is just a small reminder we are in a deep long golus and hashem yishmor!!

A few comments [coming from the gut] are in order.

    p.s: (the PS coming before the main course). I apologize in advance. But the following is a gut reaction;

    1)MR. Nasrudeen (& his ilk). I know of a few [unspecified] actions that your buddies in the “community” would agreee with;
    2) MR./MS. full of contradictions 12:13PM. Some people (like this poster) would say “You’re full of …something else”.
3)This [supposed] mindset that you ascribe to the all-time AMERICAN HERO & MEKADESH SHEM-SHOMAYIM, MR. ZELMANOVITCH A”H. (OF BLESSED MEMORY) who sacrificed his own life to give comfort to another person, is soo.. soo.. twisted and WRONG. It is [probably] at the root
of most of the ills in today’s Jewish society. That you reduce a thinking person to a robot. (i.e. “ask his Rov” ) The TORAH teaches us that where there is a need to save a person’s life you jump in and help, and not diddle around and ask questions. Your attempt to diminsh the stature of this great hero only demonstrates a lack of thinking on your part. I’m sure you can [and should] DO BETTER.

Kiddush Hashem and all, had the shiloh been asked the psak might have been to leave.

The many women and girls who committed suicide during the holocaust might also have been told not to had they asked a rov. This does not diminish in any way by the slightest of measurements the fact that they acted leshaim shomayim and reached levels of kedusha that you or I can only dream of understanding, let alone achieving.

The sad history of Klal Yisroel is replete with incidents of heiger yiddin chosing death leshaim shomayim when strict halachah did not require it.

    RBS”O! MI K’AMCHOH YISROEL!

Had Avraham Zelmanowitz, z”l called his rav about whether or not he is allowed to endanger his life for his non-Jewish paraplegic friend in the World Trade Center attack he would have been told to get out asap.
    ————
Your flippant and thoughtless comment besmirches his memory and the enormous kiddush shem shomayim that resulted from his ultimate act of compassion and bravery, as described in the following excerpt from Ha’aretz:

The story of Zelmanowitz’s bravery had turned him into an American hero. Four days after the tragedy, President George W. Bush asked the American people to remember the extraordinary behavior of the Orthodox Jewish computer expert who had worked at an insurance agency on the 27th story of one of the towers.

Zelmanowitz never married. He lived in Brooklyn close to his brother, Yankel, and his family. He had worked at the same job for many years. A year before the tragedy, Zelmanowitz visited Israel and decided to buy himself a plot near the burial place of his parents. Both parents had been born in Jerusalem, but emigrated after World War I to the United States.

“A few days before the terrorist attack,” Yankel Zelmanowitz related Monday, “Avremel attended a Sabbath shiur [lesson]. The rabbi spoke about sacrificing oneself for the love of God. Avremel told the rabbi: ‘You speak of the great historical heroes, like Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai, but how can a simple Jew like myself show his love of God?’ The rabbi made some suggestions, but Avremel was not satisfied, so he asked the same question once again. The second reply didn’t satisfy him either, nor did the third. But a few days later, he got the reply.”

A few minutes after the first plane hit the World Trade Center where Zelmanowitz was working, he rushed to see how his friend and colleague, Ed Beyea, a paraplegic, was managing. Beyea was left completely paralyzed by a diving accident 20 years earlier and was always accompanied by a nurse. Zelmanowitz urged her to leave the burning building immediately, promising to remain with his friend.

Zelmanowitz then called Beyea’s mother and held his cellular telephone up to Beyea’s mouth. Beyea assured his mother everything would be okay and said his friend, Abe, was taking care of him.

Havah Zelmanowitz said Monday that she and her husband had managed to speak to Avremel a short time before the end. “He told Yankel and I that everything was alright. He said he had enough air. We urged him to leave the building as soon as possible, but he said he had to remain behind to help some people. A few minutes later, the building collapsed.”

Let us be painfully honest with ourselves. It would be equally un-Jewish according to halacha for a Jew to risk his live to save a non-Jew.

His rov might have told him the same thing if the friend was Jewish.

I hope this guy is being careful. There’s probably a price on his head.

The only time a Muslim would even go near a Jew is when he has a bomb strapped to his body.

The guy who saved the Jew is truly a Hero. We all should make him aware of that.

may i suggest that this young man be given an award from a councilman in the district of either where the incident took place or where the person he assisted lives.
his honor should be made public.

Just proves a point: Muslims hate Jews. Sshhh: don’t say it out loud. Politically incorrect, you know.

This is no surprise. I am glad Hassan was there to help, but he is a very rare commodity. Most other Muslims would have looked on in glee as a Jew is beaten.
