The plan gives users unlimited calling time for $99.99 a month, instead of offering a specific number of minutes and charging extra for exceeding that limit. Customers will still pay extra for Internet access and text messaging, the company said today in a statement.

Verizon seeks to take more customers from larger rival AT&T Inc. and smaller Sprint Nextel Corp. [Bloomberg News]

Even if you have a family plan it is worth the time to call and modify your plan. I called and spent 30 min discussing options with Verizon and ended up saving over $100 per month. It’s competitive out there and they want to keep your business.

This plan is basically not worth it for Family Share Plans. Because then it’s something like $99.99 for each additional phone. (It gets a little cheaper depending on how many phones and exactly what level you take ie with text messaging or without text messaging.

    I just spoke with Verizon.

For the Palm/Windows Mobile phones for unlimited everything including unlimited internet it’s $149. The $139 is for non-palm phones.

Also keep in mind that if you have an employee discount with verizon and you switch to these plans, they claim that you lose the discount. I switch anyway and the discount still shows. They said that they have no idea why but it might come off tommorrow.

Unfortunately, w/ Verizon, internet access is now charged by the megabyte, even on the non-unlimited plans (ie, it’s not included in your minutes). One wonders, actually, if that is the future of pricing for internet access generally, even for the home.

I’m switching [over] today. The other company, (sprint, [now together with Nextel]) always finds a “reason” jack up the charges (without exceeding the plan-minutes). One month it’s a “misunderstanding”, by their sales rep. (whose proficiency in English leaves a lot to be desired. Then they start haggling about the amount of credit [for overcharging] due. Another month it’s a “slight” switch in plan. It started out with free, unlimited minutes for incoming calls “all the minutes all the time”, then it progressed to 600 min. (for incoming calls). Fr. there it ended up w. all minutes charged for incoming calls. You have to vigilant to see what they’re up to all the time.
