The ambulance service, which took the children to hospital, has warned people to be particularly careful when using St Moritz product, which might be more powerful than ordinary cleaning fluid.
Children can be burned just by touching surfaces that have been cleaned with it, claimed Daniel Smith, who handles training and equipment for Hatzola Manchester, a couple of kids were hospitalised overnight.

St Moritz is made by a Hungarian company called Well Done. Its own website warns: "The product is corrosive. Skin contact causes severe irritation and produces severe burns. It is corrosive to eye tissues, can cause severe eye damage. For hand protection always use rubber gloves." [thejc]

MANY children and even adults have been treated at the Staten Island University Hospital Burn Center for chemical burns before Pesach from St. Moritz use. Satmar Bikur Cholim,Staten Island Bikur Cholim, and S.I. Hatzalah have in the past placed ads in the papers (Hamodia,Yated, and Yiddish papers)warning about the dangers of this product.

they recall unsafe toys, why not recall unsafe cleaners?
anyone call 311 and see if they can direct us to the proper agency?

Also, who makes it? I think it is someone from inzerer who makes the stuff in Hungary for the EY and US and Euro haimishe market. If so a Din Torah or similar intervention from the rabbonim is warranted.

My nephew got a 3rd dgree chemical burn when he got hold of some and was able to open the cap(It has NO CHILDPROOF CAP!!) My sister in law immediately washed him up but didn’t realize that some got onto his stretchy and seeped through the velour to his thigh. He started crying hysterically and she couldn’t figure out why until she opened him up and saw the entire skin eaten away. He needed to be in the Staten Island burn Unit for 10 days and only got released 3 days before Pesach!! I don’t understand how such a product is legal to sell!! Does anybody know a phone number to call to report unsafe products? In the meantime let’s not buy this product and express our outrage to the store owner for still selling this dangerous product.

I just bought it yesterday Kosher L’Pesach. If I could safely dump it I would, as the store’ll never take it back. How do you dispose of these things?

S Moritz is lye (sodium hydroxide) as is any oven cleaner. The problem is that it is poorly packaged with no child proof cap or other protection.

WITH SMALL CHILDREN AROUND, I SWICTHED TO USING MOSTLY SOFT SCRUB WHICH WORKS VERY WELL ON ALMOST EVERYTHING. AS WITH ALL CHEMICALS & CLEANING PRODUCTS, PLEASE BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHEN KIDS ARE AROUND.

One of the reasons it is so dangerous is that it does not feel like it is burning right away. It might get on the skin or in someone’s eye, and they don’t even realize it until several minutes later when it has already done significant damage.

i dont get this! st moritz has caused more burns than ppl can imagine and for some reason its still on the market. the distributor (no name mention) knows its dangerous but wont stop bringing it in. if you wnet to staten island hospital burn unit they will tell you of the number of cases they see due to st moritz burns. its time we stop shelfing it in our grociery. the safety of our kids is more important than our ovens being spotless
