New York City – Some politically connected nonprofits continue to get a good deal of money in City Council-distributed member items.

a vigorous discussion ensued about the size of the salary earned by executive director William Rapfogel of the not-for-profit Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, which got $500,000 in member items this year.
For the record: he makes a lot of money by non-profit-world standards, but not quite as much as some commenters guessed.
According to Rapfogel, who I talked to on the phone just now, his current salary is $379,000, which squares with the number in the group’s 2005-2006 tax filing, the most recent one available online.
so what. have you seen the multi-million dollar salaries earned by non-profit hospital executives?
NOBODY deserves to make that much money from hekdesh!
What do you think? The Officers of most big Tzedoke orgenizations who come to us to fund that great Chesed org make any less? Sure the shmatte employees of that org earn ch”k. But the ones who have a title?
Besides, if the funding is made to help the poor, how come that the CEO’s come home with the big chunk?
I am not the only one asking that.
you people are pretty dumb. you dont want some moron running a $100,000,000 organization. (for those of you that cant count that is 100 Million dollars).
Now if you want to find someone good and capable of running an organization like that and making it even better, like rapfogel has done, you need to pay them a good salary otherwise they could go and work in the private sector and make alot more.
So for those of you who are so quick to jump and cry G-d put rapfogel in that position for a reason to help the thousands of Jews that he is helping. Who are you to question his compensation?
they got budget cuts so does that mean you lay off staff members maybe the executive director should take a pay cut and save people’s jobs. Since their mission is to help poor and indigent people isn’t there a saying “the fish stinks from the head’
rapfogel is an amazing leader
He does a good job he deserves it…. You get what you pay for…. If we had guys like him running the yeshiva system we would be in a differant situation then we are in now..
Mrs. W built the organization from scratch before they ousted her. There are several people that make 6 digits according to their 990s and because of a loophole, there are people who are making 6 digits who are not even on the 990. If a person thinks he’s worth 6 digits let him prove it in the private sector. Not on mumon hekdesh thats served to him on a silver platter and he writes his own check. This guy is making over a thousand bucks a day for less than eight hours. There are plenty of capable people that would be happy to run the place for 100K or less. Number one, there would instantly be another quarter million dollars in the pot. Number two it would be easier to get private donations, knowing the top 4 people aren’t taking home a million dollars.
BH, I have a pretty good career. I am often astounded by the salaries in the non profit sector because almost everything they do is redistribute tax money. They do get paid to help people apply for Government programs. Most donations get to pay pretty rich salaries and benefits. One easy way to check, see if they have a different health plan for the top echelon, that is a symbol of taking care of themselves.
