New York, NY – City Council to Fight Bloomberg over Tax Rebate

New York, NY – A showdown between Mayor Bloomberg and the City Council is brewing, with the mayor planning to rescind the $400 homeowner property tax rebate without the council’s approval – setting the stage for a battle in the courts.

Council members insist the mayor needs their approval to yank the popular rebates.

“A local law would be required to eliminate the rebate, so the council would have to amend the local law, enacting legislation,” said Jamie McShane, spokesman for Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Stu Loeser, a spokesman for the mayor, would only say, “We disagree with them.”

The dispute is putting Bloomberg and Quinn, who usually stand together on controversial issues, at odds and opening the mayor up to lawsuits from individual council members.

The mayor announced last week that he is withholding the rebate as one of several cost-saving measures to cope with the faltering economy. The rebate checks would total about $250 million and they were supposed to be sent out Oct. 1.

Why doesn’t Bloomberg just proclaim himself KING of New York City? Then he can do whatever he wants without asking anyone!

Bloomberg doesn’t understand that 400 for your average family means a lot. Let him cut some foodstamps and medicaid or lay off some govt employees to get his budget in order. Why do the middle class always have to get the short end of the stick. Let the govt workers feel the fear of being laid off

Gee, what a surprise! He thinks he can do whatever he wants now he can run again. You were warned BY ME!! I said on the last articles that soon you’ll be changing your tune. It seems I was right, although I must confess I didn’t think you’d change so soon! You are even more fickle than I gave you credit for.

Don’t forget the plastic bag tax, people! Time to bring back the Bubby Shopping Cart.
