Wesley Hills, NY – When Hillcrest firefighters responded to a fire call at a shopping center last night, the fire wasn’t hard to miss.

A 1996 Dodge minivan that was in flames was illegally parked in the fire zone, a fire official said.

Nobody was inside the minivan at Wesley Kosher Plaza on Route 306 in Wesley Hills. Twenty firefighters put out the fire in a few minutes, but it was the first time Chris Kear, chief of the Hillcrest Volunteer Fire Department, had seen anything like it.
“We’ve responded to fire calls where we’ve had people parked in” fire zones, Kear said this morning. “They see us coming and get themselves out of the way. But nothing like this.”
Around 7:35 p.m., the minivan’s owner, a Passaic, N.J., man, had parked in front of the shopping center and gone into a Jewish religious novelty shop, Kear said.
The driver left the engine running. The fire apparently started in the engine and spread to the dashboard. Its cause is unknown.
Three Hillcrest fire trucks responded. The minivan sustained heavy damage and was undrivable, Kear said.
Ramapo police issued the driver a ticket for parking illegally in a fire zone.
“It’s kind of adding insult to injury,” Kear said.
Well, he DID park in a no parking zone. How else can the city pay the firefighters who came to the rescue.
“wasn’t hard to miss. “
means easy to miss
hashkocho protis.
That’s what it means park and you catch fire. he should have been in the no fire zone. Typical flouting of secular law endangering others.
Twenty firefighters put out the fire ? in a few minutes ? WOW
Hashem pays mideh kneged mideh he parked in fire zone so his car caught fire!!!
Well, this could have been very dangerous, if the fire had spread and he was blocking access the firefighters need. It could have reached the gas tank and exploded, damaging the stores.
Sane people do not leave a car running with no occupants, it could be grabbed by a thief and cause injuries!!!!!
Maybe it was Jimmy Justice that set the car on fire
God really does have a sense of humor (and irony).
Safety Concern
I wonder if more research can be done about the background of this particular model (giving that is a U.S. made car over 10 years old) has had problems in the past with blowing up. If it did then it should be publicized that this minivan is at least a remote fire hazard. I once remember seeing a car rating program that said that certain SUV ran the risk of tipping over while they were turning. Granted if was very rare, but just the possibility (even through its Lo Schicach) should be a point for concern. I don’t understand why it makes a difference that the car blew up in the fire lane for.
For some reason – unkown to me, but true – older cars tend to go up in flames more often than others when the weather is very cold outside. Please ask your mechanic to check the cooling system and be careful when adding oil so that there is no extra left on the engine block.
If someone gets Shot-Dead while Jay-Walking, they will just give the victim a “ticket” for jay walking but the murder continues to walk free.
Tickets = Money
Life and Property damage? Who cares?
Police could care less.
That’s why NYC Traffic Tickets are UP
And the Murder rate is UP too.
Thanks to Mr Bloomberg and other people who think like Bloomberg who run other places just to make money on parking mistakes while murderers because you don’t make cash $ on murderers arrests and so the city lets murderers walk free and uses precious police resources and TIME and EFFORT of our CUT BACK Police Force, to waste their time and energy looking for seat belts and cell phone motorists instead of looking for Rapists and Murderers.
A Frum person just lost his car, and people on this blog seem to be happy.
How disgusting.
B”H, no one got hurt. He deserves a ticket! He broke the law parking there. The fire lane is there for emergency vehicles to have easy access to the building. Where I live, the local cops make a fortune issuing those tickets. The RSO gave you two legs; you can walk from your spot. Obviously if he was disabled, that’s a different story. But that’s why handicapped spots are near the front.
It’s actually better that it did there instead of in a legal spot. He could have caught other cars on fire.
People are so stupid this guy had lots of agmas nefesh and you guys say good a bande shlechte bigots
I have seen cars blocking the exit for Hatzolah ambulances with their cars so they could go daven.
