The mayor’s preliminary budget released Friday proposes to amend state law to allow for traffic-light cameras at “unlimited locations” in the city and to raise the fine from $50 to $100.
“The program has been successful, and we want to expand it,” Mayor Bloomberg spokesman Marc LaVorgna said.
The state Legislature has capped the number of cameras at 100. The cameras snap photos of cars passing through a red light – including the license plate. The registered owner of the vehicle is automatically mailed a ticket.
The preliminary budget calls for adding 20 more cameras, which would bring in $6.2 million in fiscal year 2009-10.
In his latest budget proposal, Gov. Paterson supported the removal of the cap on cameras. The Legislature would also have to approve the measure.
“If the state legislation becomes a reality, we would be free to continue to add cameras as needed,” LaVorgna said of the city program.
I guess it’s time to go online and purchase the “ANTI CAMRA GLARE SRAY” for the license plate.
get ready for more car accidents by people slamming their brakes
The mayor is crazy !!! We can’t let this happen
They say that scotch guard works as well to protect you from those camaras.
although mr. bloomberg is out of wack on many issues, i can’t oppose this one. unlike hiring more traffic agents to issue unnecessary tickets, this is vital. many lives would have been saved if drivers would’nt pass red lights.
if only one live would be saved by the mayor’s proposal, he’s got my backing.
Here we go – another way how to slam us with fines….. bloomberg doesn’t stop to find ways how to take out our hard earned money. The excuse is allways “it’s for our safety – ……”
Bloomy please stop this nonsense. You don’t know what it means to pay for a ticket, to take out of money of our weekly salary and pay for a ticket which is by lot of people a result of less food on the table….
Don’t be the “biggest charity donor”…. start your charity “with not taking…. “
Sorry guys – my mother a”h was killed by someone going thru a red light. It happened 37 years ago, but the memories never fade… If this prevents one accident – it’s worth it!
People don’t take it personally he’s not concerned about u nor ur safety he’s doing it for the money and nothing else
On this one I agree with the Mayor. Up the fine to $250.00.
What reason could you give for passing a red light? You could C”V kill someone.
Mr. Mayor, these are the type of tickets you should enforce. Also enforce passing flashing school buses lights tickets instead of meeters.
by the next vote’s we need to drive him out from citi hall
are the cameras able to be calibrated to take a picture before the light actually turns red? if so the city should be forced to get it calibrated by an outside non biased firm .
cameras have been in use in england and israel for years now .
Bloomberg is out to drive the middle class out of the city. Every time you turn around he’s got his hand in you pocket. we must
THROW…..THE……BUM……..OUT
I disagree with The mayor ok this. If we are adding cameras for safety reasons I would be for it. It should not be used as a means of income.
you see its only in new york that they are out for our money. why in new jersey is the living much cheaper.
I heard of a town that had these cameras and after two years got rid of them. They found that people were’nt going on red light and they were losing money. They don’t care for anybody’s safety. Only care about MONEY! Specially Bloomberg. If he would care about safety, he would hire more police and pay them better, rather than hiring more of those roaches that roam the streets and give tickets fo nothing.
Or:
Dont run reds.
Imagine!
I switzerland they have cameras all over the highways.. I f you go “2 KM” over the limit you get flashed with a big ticket!!
How about, instead of kvetching about getting tickets, be thankful for the added bonus that might actually stop you from killing someone when you run a red in your urge to get home 5 minutes faster? Sad, but Boruch Hashem that the weight of one’s wallet is can possible make a difference between vilde chaye and safe driver.
He gets all of his ideas from the UK… If it’s so great, go run for mayor there.
this is good news! will definitely save some lives.
I don’t think this is a safety think, because you can pass the red light and you won’t get flashed, this flashes only when its orange or first 3 second when it gets red, after that you can pass
#30 – Very true, though obviously people here want to focus more on the money part than red light rules are meant for saving lives. Some people have Interesting Priorities.
