Albany, NY – The movement to legalize medicinal marijuana is gaining momentum in New York, with a proposal to let some people grow their own or buy from a state-approved organization.

Sen. Thomas Duane of New York City is introducing the bill, which will have a matching version sponsored by Manhattan Assemblyman Richard Gottfried. The Democrat-led Assembly has passed similar measures in recent years, but the issue fizzled in the formerly Republican-led Senate.

Now Democrats have taken control the Senate and the issue could get some traction in that chamber. A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith didn’t immediately comment.

Gov. David Paterson’s office also did not comment on the proposal Duane is set to release Tuesday.

Finally! Millions of people smoke it and all the money goes to Mexican murderers! Its about time NY starts allowing production and hopefully TAXATION of the stuff! Maybe they can scale back that 300% tax on cigarettes.

Its about time libertarian conservative ideas start taking hold! Congratulations NY!

I never understood why doctors can prescribe much stronger narcotics, and not a ‘soft’ narcotic such as weed

I can’t believe the stuff isn’t legal yet full stop. It is a necessary ingredient for a good frum lifestyle! Think about it – if we would just be able to drag down a on joint –
    # Yeshiva will become much more popular with bochurim – the current dropout rate will dwindle and vanish.
    # Hamodia will suddenly seem funny and informative
    # Sholom Bayis will get a whole lot simpler – less divorces
    # YU students will finally start growing beards and sporting nachman yarmulkes
    # First dates will be much less awkward – a first step to ending the shidduch crisis

Look it was always legal for medical reasons. This is just a fake issue probably to justify some sort of tax and regulation. My parents were both M.D.’s in N.J. and I remember they had “stamps” from the State saying it was legal for them to prescribe opium, cocaine and cannabis as well as I think belladonna. Doh? Did they stop issuing that stamp after Mom was gone in the mid 70’s? I don’t know but if they did it was all part of the bigger plan to create a controversy and furor where none exists.

Smoking is just one way of extracting the benefits of weed. Yes it can damage the pulmonary system like tobacco, (although preliminary studies seem to suggest cannibinoids tend to inhibit the growth of cancerous cells in the lungs), yet it is definitely less “dangerous” than alcohol. It has much less potential for addiction, there is no physical withdrawal, and no proven long term mental detriments. Legalizing it will have immense social benefits by putting black market dealers out of business, and a huge source of tax revenue. There is virtually nothing wrong with it when enjoyed in moderation.

Your forgetting that this could send crimes like burglary and rape sky high. Making this substance readily available to every goy on the street will take its toll on our communities for the worse.

It looks like there are many vin members who smoke pot, pot has changed ppls life for the better.. Too much can destroy you, but for moderation it should not be a prob!

    Some facts:

    1. One joint is more carcinogenic than one cigarette. But pot smokers don’t smoke nearly as much pot as tobacco smokers smoke tobacco. Even the biggest stoner smokes fewer joints than even a light smoker does cigarettes. So a marijuana habit is a lot healthier than a tobacco habit.

    2. Little is known about marijuana’s effect on driving. The few studies that have been done seem to show that, unlike alcohol, marijuana actually IMPROVES driving ability. If this is true, then perhaps it should be mandatory to get stoned before getting behind the wheel! But the studies done so far were very small, and it could be that bigger and better studies will find the opposite; so far no such studies have been done, because it’s illegal. So it’s probably not a good idea to rely on these findings just yet.

    3. There is one way that marijuana can kill you. If a bale of it falls on your head from a great height, you’re probably dead.
