The Child Nutrition Act is up for reauthorization. Gillibrand and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn on Wednesday said more children should get free meals.
Right now, children living at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty line are eligible for free school meals. That’s $28,665 for a family of four.
Gillibrand and Quinn say the cost of living is higher in areas like New York City. Gillibrand’s proposal would expand free meals to all children living under 185 percent of the federal poverty line in certain high-cost areas. That’s $40,792 for a family of four.
Counties where fair market rent is above the national average would be deemed high cost.
Isn’t it good their up for reelection soon.
of course it would be nice if yeshivahs who collect the funds actually comply with nutritional requirements and don’t divert the money while feeding the kids tuna sandwiches and canned corn.
Tuna is a protien, corn is a vegetable and bread is a carbohydrate. This is a healthy lunch.
It’s all “small change”.
The only real talk, is to get what we fully deserve, full paid tuition, just like in Public School.
We should not be discriminated against just because our religious beliefs does not permit us to go to Public School.
Separation of Church and Sate means that the government can’t penalize frum yidden for following their religion by making their own schools, because their religion does not allow them to go to public school.
It’s about time.
In an election year, we can pull it off.
