Albany, NY – Paterson: I’m Being Treated Unfairly Because I’m Black

Albany, NY – Gov. David Paterson played the race card in a big way today, suggesting he is facing tougher questions about his performance and political viability than the governors of most other struggling states because he is black.

During a wide-ranging interview with DN columnist and radio personality Errol Louis this morning, Paterson said he feels he feels an effort is being “orchestrated” to get him to bow out of the 2010 race.

Paterson alleged he and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick – both of whom are the first African Americans to hold their respective positions and are tanking in the polls – are being treated unfairly by the media due to the color of their skin.

The governor said he thinks the same thing is happening to the nation’s first black president, Barack Obama, who also seen his approval rating drop due to his controversial efforts to overhaul the health care system.

“This state is not in the trouble that Michigan is in Pennsylvania is in and Massachusetts is in, but you don’t see in those other states this crescendo about getting rid of the governor just because we’re in a recession,” Paterson told Louis this morning on AM 1600 WWRL.

“And I submit that the same kind of treatment that Deval Patrick is receiving right now in Massachusetts, and I’m receiving; the way in which the New York State Senate was written about, calling them a bunch of people with thick necks – they’re talking about Malcolm Smith and John Sampson – that we’re not in the post-racial period.”

“And the reality is that the next victim on the list and you see it coming is President Barack Obama, who did nothing more than try to reform a health care system that’s not ten percent of GDP and will be 20 percent of GDP in the next four years only because he’s trying to make change.”

Paterson lashed out at the media, which has been highly critical of him in recent months.

“If these people who are writing the articles, Errol, had to run the state, they couldn’t run it for five minutes because they’re about to go under themselves. And the fact is that this state is alive and well, will balance its budget in September and will be around a lot longer than their outlets are.”

He singled out the Post’s Fred Dicker, author of the anti-Senate column referenced above and a number of stories supportive of Paterson’s potential 2010 primary challenger, AG Andrew Cuomo, saying:

“If I went left, Dicker would write a column saying I should have gone right. Every week. Every single week. When you write 40 columns that are the same, you’ve lost your objectivity.”

The governor lamented the fact that black media outlets aren’t coming to his defense, calling out NY1’s Dominic Carter for grilling the Rev. Al Sharpton last night about Paterson’s recent late-night appearance at the Taj nightclub.

(The governor insisted he was gone long before midnight, contrary to a Brooklyn blogger’s report).

Paterson pushed back against Louis’ efforts to end the interview, saying: “I’m just getting warmed up.” Without naming names, he slammed Cuomo and his allies for trying to get him not to run in 2010 and insisted it won’t work.

“Even if it didn’t work out, what is the shame of running for re-election and losing?” Paterson said.
“It would be my highest honor to have served as governor of this state, to make the tough decisions – the decisions that others before me made – and then lose and then look up a few years, later like in the case of Mario Cuomo, and people now say, ‘Wow. He was doing a good job. He had to make some tough decisions back then.’”

“There’s no shame in losing. The shame is that you don’t fight.”

Here we go again! ObamaCare is bad for the country, but when people stand up and debate it, the liberals call them racist. When Obama was running for president, if you opposed him, the liberals called you racist. When Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson shake down corporations and you comment on it, the liberals call you racist. Now Patterson’s numbers are down, and people just don’t want him to be governor and … Patterson calls them racist. This is getting very predictable!

    OH MY GOD!
    Governor Paterson,
By saying something SO stupid you remind us how you came to office and how lucky we are, that we are living in a free country and we can elect our own officials sooner then later.
And I’m really sorry for you because you may have meant well but you failed miserably and now you’re up for re-election; and since you stand no chance powerful people in your Party want you off the ticket.
This has nothing to do with your skin color man!
And your comparison to President Obama was such a twist on facts; I don’t know how you had the audacity to say that about people in this great country.
So many of us voted for Obama ONLY because of his skin color and his approval ratings are spiraling out of control (like you stated but without pointing out the truth) due to the fact that he’s trying to quickly shove healthcare down many Americans throats, and they dont want it.
Be real. Stop playing the race card when reality kicks in and you see your career is over!

Gevalt!! I’m being persecuted just because I’m black….just like those poor Skvere chasidim at the Homowak, or the Satmer in Monsey etc. This sounds like a broken record. Yiddin, goyim makes, no difference. If you are incompetent or can’t get your way, throw a tantrum like a child and yell racism, anti-semitism, etc.

Gov Paterson you should be thanking your lucky stars that you were elected as Lt Gov, for it wasn’t too long ago that would never have happened. Don’t blame your treatment on the fact that you are black, blue, green, or even purple with yellow polka dots! Blame it on your complete and utter incompetency.

The same goes for the president. There are people out there who have been claiming we are racist because we don’t agree with him on just about everything. That cannot be farther from the truth! We don’t agree with him because we think, no we know, his policies are bad for the United States. It has nothing to do with his color. That being said, I don’t think he is doing black people any favors by trying to shove his far left socialist views upon the country.

So Gov Paterson, your statement of, ” … the next victim on the list and you see it coming is President Barack Obama … only because he’s trying to make change.” Well Gov, perhaps the problem is that he doesn’t know HOW to make change!

I try to have respect for the office no matter what stupid moves they make but Gov, I have ZERO NADA ZILCH GURNISHT respect for you!

oh come on gov. paterson, I remember listening to your swearing in ceremony and your speech you truly did sound great. i was excited from the way you spoke and what you spoke and now you are stooping so low and saying that it is because you are black that is why you are having such a hard time. give that up people did not care when you came into office if you are black or white or even if you are legally blind people wanted to give you a chance. and for that guy in the white house he was only voted in because he is black had he been white he would not be where he is now! so please do stop with the race game because you will stoop lower!

“Paterson: I’m Being Treated Unfairly Because I’m Black” Yes, you are 100% correct. Affirmative Action has done for many what they are incapable and uniwlling of doing for themselves and making our present society a group of incompetents who still feel the need for entitlement.

What a loser. The guy admits he cheats on his wife while replacing a man ousted for his adulterous lifestyle. Then he tanks as a governor and puts the state in debt. Yet, who does he blame? The white folk of course! To tell you the truth, until now I had almost forgotten that he was black. Thanks Dave for reminding me that you’re still paranoid. You’re no longer a governor; your a walking stereotype.

He fired many whites and replaced them with blacks just because they were white.

He said you don’t go back from Black.

    He is the racist.

i don’t know if he’s really being treated unfairly, but one thing for sure – he never got elected to be governor, so he should understand that not everyone is happy and not everyone agrees with his policies
