The Department of Transportation has installed 180 countdown crosswalk signals at busy intersections around the city as part of a pilot program.

The signals feature a countdown clock to let pedestrians know how much time they have before the light changes.

The DOT will study the intersections to determine if the new signals increase safety.

Another campaign promise from Bloomberg 8 years ago, only now being “studied”. Guess its an election year.

They tested 5 last year, now they are doing a second, larger test. BTW Lakewood has had a couple of them for a few years already.

It looks like it is working very well in San Francisco.

It helps for drivers too – we know how much time we have until the light turns yellow. They have it all along 878 in Lawrence and it’s great.

while its new to the city its not a new product and there have been extensive studies done proving it does indeed increase safety. Why do they feel the need to study it themselves?

Well, Chicago is way ahead of New York on this one. We’ve had a countdown signal at one of the main intersections (Touhy/Sacramento) of West Rogers Park for years. I don’t know the statistics, but I think the intersection is safer.

They have this in some parts of Westchester too. Helpful, but some intersections need more time for the elderly to cross.

There’s been one here on COney Island Avenue and corner of KingsHighway for quite a while. It was put up for study. It is great.
It’s been up for so long that the studies should have finished eons ago!
