New York, NY – Israel will pay 10 million US dollars in compensation to the United Nations for bombing its facilities during the offensive on Gaza one year ago, an Israeli newspaper reported.

Martin Nesirky said talks between the two sides “are at very advanced stage” and that an agreement was “reached in principle on the terms of an arrangement under which Israel would make a payment to the UN.”
“We anticipate receiving that green light (from Israel) imminently. When that’s given an agreement will be formalized and payment will be made,” he added.
The Hebrew-language daily Yedioth Ahronoth said that Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak Wednesday night informed the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the Israeli decision.
According to the BBC website, Israel is to pay 10 million dollars in compensation, which will mark the first time the Jewish state has paid for the damage caused during its Gaza offensive, which was launched December 27, 2008.
This is a smart move by EY and hopefully will bring a quick end to this episode which helped feed the backlash against the gaza offensive.

I remember reading new reports of Hamas terrorists operating from the safety of UN Facilities including schools and storage depots. If that is the case, Israel has no moral obligation to pay for damage to combat these Hamas battle positions. Just my humble opinion.
Israel has a history with paying reparations to the United Nations. In 1948 U.N. set a legal precedence by winning a court case against Israel when a U.N. monitor was assassinated by Israeli militants Lehi or Irgun. It was the first case where the courts recognized U.N. as having “standing” in courts while it is a non state actor.
