The man who cops think is tied to the slaying of Yoseph Robinson tried to make a run for it when he was briefly left alone and unhandcuffed in an interrogation room at the 70th Precinct stationhouse.

Cops quickly corralled the possible suspect, and the man, who has not been charged in Robinson’s murder, busted his head in the scuffle.

Police had received several tips that the man held up the MB Vineyards liquor store in Midwood last Thursday and then shot Robinson, who was trying to defend his girlfriend.

Investigators unearthed a license plate for the possible suspect’s car, the sources said. Detectives tracked it down, watched it until the owner arrived before dawn and took him into custody.

The man has not confessed and investigators do not have enough evidence to charge him, the sources said.

He was wanted on an unrelated assault warrant and is expected to face charges in that case.

The robber who held up the liquor store was wearing a mask, making it more difficult to positively identify him, the sources said.

The gunman pointed his revolver at the head of Lahavah Wallace, Robinson’s girlfriend. That prompted the clerk to desperately reach for the weapon – only to be fatally shot himself.

The Jamaican-born Robinson left a hip-hop career and turned away from a troubled past to convert to Judaism.

The fact that a prisoner was left unguarded in the 70th Precinct station house (and he nearly escaped) does not surprise me. There have been many problems with that precinct, going back decades. In fact, Mayor Lindsay tried to close that precinct in 1967, and have it combined with an adjacent precinct. It is too bad that he didn’t succeed. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, the resident commander of the 70th was transferred out, every few months and a new one brought in. In the 1990’s, a cop from the 70th precinct brutalized a prisoner, costing the city millions of dollars. There were demonstrations held in front of that facility (154 Lawrence Avenue), which received worldwide coverage. The cop was sentenced to 30 years in jail, and is still incarcerated. Also, there have been nasty confrontations over the years, involving frum residents and members of the 70th . There was one incident where a frum resident was brought into the 70th on a traffic infraction, and while he was seated in the 70th, other uniformed cops made anti-semitic remarks. The latter was documented several years ago in The Jewish Press. The article stated “There is something rotten about the 70th Precinct”.

There is a difference between police “knowing” who committed a crime and the DA proving to a jury that he “did” the crime.

Left alone and handcuffed? A suspect murderer? Are they crazy?
Why was he uncuffed for even a second. Who knows how many people’s death he’s responsible for.

Too bad Yoseph Robinson didn’t have a gun to blow him away.
