Monticello, NY – Crime, including violent crimes, increased significantly in Sullivan County the first half of 2010.

The District Attorney’s Office handled 1,934 cases through June, which is up by 251 cases, or 15 percent, over the same six months in 2009, according to District Attorney Jim Farrell.
“It is concerning from the standpoint of public safety to see these numbers reverse,” Farrell said. Crime numbers declined from 2007 through 2009.
In a typical year, the DA’s office processes about 3,500 cases, but is on pace at the end this year to have more than 3,900. This wouldn’t be a record year for crime but it is worrisome, Farrell said.
“We are busier,” Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said. “There are a lot of thefts, a lot of domestics, a lot of DWIs.” Chaboty believes this might be connected to the times.
“I haven’t done a scientific study, but the trends seem to follow the economy.”
Areas with the largest population — Monticello, Liberty and Fallsburg — have the most crime, Farrell said.
Another good reason for yidden to stay home next summer. You can bet mugged in BP or willy at much lower cost and not have to engage in the bitul torah and yichud problems everyone knows are a direct outcome of the familes shlepping to the catskills every summer leaving the men at home to work (some actually do) or study in Kollel.
I wonder what the percentage of arrests is broken out by residents vs visitors? Is the influx of second homes and more wealth leading to a rise in burglaries, armed robberies, etc.?? If so, some of the taxes these second homes pay should go to increasing the police force, drive bys of summer homes , undercover surveillance, decoys, etc. If the summer visitors are committing these crimes, like buying drugs, or DWI, then we should know that too and be prepared to deal with it from within our community.
#1 … how does it feel to know that most people don’t agree with your views and don’t intend to follow your orders?
There used to be a passenger railroad, The Ontario & Western, which would take travelers from Weehawken, NJ to the mountains. The area of Monticello, Liberty, and Fallsburg, was formerly known as The Borscht Belt, or The Yiddisha Mountains. Most of the resorts which were famous in that area, are gone. However, the memories linger on.
To number 3, how does it feel to know that the silent majority out there thinks number 1 is right on the money, and have no use for your opinion?
Reply to #4 : what do you mean “used to be”? Have you been upstate recently?
#1 (Says:) yours posts are always interesting but tend to go in two differnt directions. Several days ago you claimed to have been in White Lake and tried to save the gentlemen who drowned yet you mock going to the Catskills… what gives?

The crime issues in Sullivan County are very serious…lots of gang activity is one of the problems. There appears to be a big influx of ex NYC residents up there as well, many from from the lesser area’s of the city. With some exceptions the new residents bring with them the mentality of getto living and continue with their bad ways. The current Sheriff Michael Schiff is a seasoned professional and I’m sure he is doing his best to work with the local towns and their police to keep things as under control as possible
