19 cases of mumps have been reported at Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia.
The Jewish day school is located on Drexel Road off City Avenue.
The ill students had recently visited an out-of-state school where there was also a mumps outbreak.
The health department is working to contain the virus and has identified those who were exposed.
Officials say there is no risk to the general public as of now.
The boy that got it was also part of Torah Academy of Greater Philadelphia and he had shiurim with boys and teachers from TA.!!
thank g-d I am one of those mom’s that give her kids immunizations
There were similiar epidemics of mumps in yeshivos in Monsey and Brooklyn over the past year or two; is there some type of hygiene issue that these schools need to focus on?? It is highly contagious and can be very dangerous to some yinglach
R”L, there have been outbreaks of strains of mumps not related to strains covered by the vaccine.
Immunizations must be reinforced after 10 years. Most parents are very diligent about getting immunizations for their children when they are infants and toddlers, but very few bother to follow up when these children become teenagers. Public high schools insist on immunizations for all teenage students.
Some people say the vaccines cause autism.
NO vaccine gives 100% immunity. To think like that clearly shows the posted has no idea how the immunizations works.
A number of philly talmidim who had the mumps or were thought to have the mumps are children of doctors who know a bit more than posters 1, 6, and 7.
My son B”H learns in Philly and got the mumps. A 9th grader had brought it from Telshe Cleveland after Sukkos. My son has gotten every immunization but he got the mumps anyway. The Yeshiva is doing a great job keeping the outbreak to a minimum and my son was back in Yeshiva (per our Doctors instructions) 3 days later and Shteiging away.
My son also laearns in Philly and #19 has the story correct. There are boys who have gotten three doses of the mumps vaccine and still got the mumps.
