Stuff like this happen to many rabbanim unfortunately because the asskan or shamash decides to say or do things against people he himself dislikes. Either way rav ovadia knows better and doesn’t have the time for stupidity.

It seems that throughout our history, many (most? all?) great machlokesin took place when askanim and second-tier rabannim with political agendas fed misinformation to their leadership.

A fascinating example of this, and one that is more and more becoming the subject of objective examination by the Chareidi/Heimish velt, is the fight against the Rambam. It is fascinating that he dynamics of this, and others (the Baal HaTanya and the GR’A, for example), goes on exactly today as it did over all these hundreds of years, and we have still not learned anything from this. To this day we say Kinos for the great tragedies that ultimately befell Klal Yisroel as a result of the actions of these Rabannim/Askanim. (The Catholic Inquisition had never been granted authority over Jews until the enemies of the Rambam, all acting l’shaim shomayim, in order to burn the sefarim, invited the church to have shlita over Jews.

Reb Moshe, ZT”L, for example (one of many, many), was always available to anybody, in the Yeshiva or on the phone, without the intervention of Askanim. But then again, he was a true tzaddik and gadol hador, and not interested in power, politics, or personal aggrandizement.

As happens to all humans, a number of gedolim have suffered serious declines in their later years. Some were of a nature that no longer at the level they used to be. Those with respect shielded them and cared for them. Nebich, some others exploited their fathers or rabbonim or rebbes for personal advantage, either falsely making statements in their name or manipulating into stating things they would not have said if they had been given proper information. Eventually such terrible manipulations hurt the kovod of the godol. Even in decline a great person deserves respect for his great accomplishments and freedom from inflicted blemishes that will now be counted against his previous wisdom.
