New York, NY – New York’s Department of Homeless Services declared a “Code Blue” emergency Saturday night as a wave of Arctic air sent temperatures plummeting towards their lowest points this winter in America’s Midwest and East Coast.

The declaration doubles the number of outreach teams on the streets to find those at risk of frostbite, hypothermia and even death. The procedure also means homeless people are checked on every two hours.

Staten Island University Hospital physician Dr Anthony Vassallo told NY1.com he expected the cold weather to bring in a range of patients with frost bite and hypothermia.

He recommended to avoid the conditions people layer up, drink plenty of water and use common sense if working outdoors.

Earlier Alex Sosnowski, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com, summed up the freezing situation when he said: “The iceman cometh to the Midwest, and the Northeast is next.”

Already some thermometer numbers were eye-popping – and bone chilling.

International Falls, Minnesota, which calls itself “Icebox of the Nation,” registered 46 degrees below Fahrenheit (-43 Celsius) Friday. By Saturday it had warmed up to -13 F (-25C), but the wind chill made it seem far colder.

Minnesota also took the honors for the lowest temperature recorded Saturday morning with Waskish, near the Canadian border, registering -35 F (-35.2C).

Chicago, which is to host Sunday’s Super Bowl playoff between the Bears and Green Bay Packers, hit -4 F (-20C) Friday – with a wind chill of -20 to -25 F (-28.8 to -31.6C) – the coldest Jan 21 in 27 years.

But by kickoff, it was expected to be a fairly balmy 18 F (-7.7C), the Chicago Tribune reported.

And in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers host the New York Jets for the AFC championship Sunday, fans were expected to encounter single digit temperatures, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

Elsewhere in the East, New York was expecting frigid temperatures throughout the weekend, with an overnight low Saturday of 14 F (-10C) in New York City.

Boston braced for a high Sunday that won’t crack 20 F (-6.6C) and could drop to 10 F Monday, the Boston Globe said. In Greenfield, Massacheusetts, the Sunday overnight low was forecast to be -22 F(-30C).

And next week didn’t sound much better, with forecasters saying there was the potential for another major snow storm to hammer parts of the Northeast.

If you want you or your loved ones to get frostbite or even a heart attack, make sure to ignore most or all of the warnings. Don’t wear a warm coat, don’t wear gloves, don’t wear a warm hat and if you do wear a scarf wear it draped around your coat or shirt rather than wrapped around your neck.

If you’re middle-aged or older, exert yourself while outdoors.

Make sure your kids are allowed out without gloves and zipping up their coats, or wearing scarfs or face marks.

For those who don’t seek to get sick or incapacitated, use common sense, stay indoors as much as possible, and bundle up.

Although any major stress, be it “too hot” or “too cold” or any other major stress and weaken the immune system, nevertheless the main reason why we “catch a cold” or virus more often in the winter than in the summer is not because of the lower temperature but because the air being dryer inside, (and or crowding indoors) which lets the germs travel more efficiently from person to person etc.

The bottom line is that for the most part you are just as likely to get sick in the winter if you stay indoors as would be if you spent more time outdoors.

And probably outdoors (VERY warmly dressed up) is far healthier than in the toxic air indoors.

There is far more pollution inside anyone’s weatherized and sealed, winter home, than in the worst summer smog day, outdoors.
