Eighty-one percent of voters oppose the casino pact signed with the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans, according to a statewide poll conducted for a coalition of horse-track “racinos.”
“When you have a stroke-of-midnight, under-the-table deal like that to hand over a full-scale casino to an out-of-state Indian tribe, it’s not surprising that the public thinks it was a bad idea,” Saratoga Gaming & Raceway investor James Featherstonehaugh said.
Count me as one of the 81%. Casinos are a plague.
Do people think that money in Casinos comes from thin air? It comes from people, some of whom are not very well off at all, and who frequently really cannot afford to be losing money. So we have a cycle where the taxpayer sends tax money to people, who then gamble it away in casinos.
Lovely.
A casino in Sullivan County would be a wonderful outcome for the heimeshe community that lives in Monticello and Fallsburg year around and the tens of thousands who spend the summers in the mountains. It would provide much needed employment opportunity for boys and girls who have very few job openings and also provide a great entertainment venue for motzi shabbos where there is currently nothing else to do but hang out by the pizza place or go to the Walmart.

Casinos generally employ people from outside the local area. They bring in illegal immigrants and other cheap labor. Crime rates in the area skyrocket and the local police and hospitals become overworked and financially stressed. Just look at Atlantic City. Two blocks away from the hotels and casinos, it’s a dump.
