Munich, Germany – A German holidaymaker has won compensation for being confronted with a humourous sketch which included a ‘Heil Hitler’ greeting while on holiday in Egypt, a judgement published Monday said.

On the penultimate day of his holiday in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the hotel put on a show which included the portrayal of how different nationalities greeted each other.

The Germans were portrayed marching past each other, raising their left arms and shouting ‘Heil Hitler.’

The man said the sketch was unpleasant and he had felt unwelcome and demanded a 25 per cent discount on the 689 euros (1,000 dollars) he had paid for the holiday plus 500 euros for ruining it.

The judge ruled he should receive a 20 per discount for the last two days of the holiday – 34.5 euros in total. The sketch hadn’t ruined the whole holiday, she said, and a bad joke did not amount to discrimination.

The man had also demanded a 10 per cent discount because the hotel had one day removed the cover of the sunbed which he normally used and given it to another guest. The judge rejected the complaint.

Considering it was Egypt, they probably thought they were honoring him.

Germany has a glorious history going back a couple of millenia. There is far, far more to their heritage than that horrible period of 1933-45. And the Federal Republic has taken huge steps to rehabilitate its image at home and abroad in the period following the war. They deserve major credit for doing so. The same cannot be said of Poland, Russia, Ukraine, the Baltics, Turkey, etc., all of whom have similar historical blemishes in need of repair.
