According to the New York Times, (http://nyti.ms/RvrirJ) Jerry Schmetterer, the spokesman for DA Hynes, was quoted as saying, “We are investigating the conduct of the police officers in this arrest.” NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne said the Internal Affairs Bureau has also notified the Civilian Complaint Review Board, an independent body which investigates allegations of misconduct and abuse by police officers.

Officer Luis A. Vega, who is seen on the video repeatedly pummeling Mr. HaLevy, has been placed on modified duty while the investigation is ongoing. The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, a union which represents police officers, refused to comment on the incident.

Standard procedure…doesn’t mean a thing. TYhey’ll probably tranfer him and he’ll be back at it again in another precinct very soon.

Even though the officer was justified in using force, it seemed as if was way excessive. First he started him off with that viscous punch in the face. He could have tackled him to ground.

On the other hand the screaming of bias I’d ludicrous, and counterproductive. The office was wrong, it doesn’t make him a bigot.

The cops gave a totally different story until they realized they had a 7 min tape. They changed their tune.

The police brass tolerate this type of violent behavior. During the Wall Street protests, an NYCPD police inspector pepper sprayed a young woman, who was merely seated on the sidewalk, and not bothering anyone. Her horrible screams could be heard on a tape. The cop in question was merely suspended for 10 days and transferred to Staten Island; he should have been fired, for excessive use of force. Regarding the woman cop, some of them are even more vicous than their male counterparts, as they have to “prove” themselves, and act as tough, if not tougher than the men.

I tend to think there is more to the story then meets the naked eye. I think Mr. Hlaevi was up to no good. The cops have to adhere to strict conduct rules. they know that if they don’t it can be extremly messy.
Futhermore, this outcry does no good to the general security and saftey of NYC. do we really want the cops to think twice when arresting those commiting crimes in our nieghborhoods? The more lawsuits and burecratic rules you put on the cops the harder it is to stop the bad guys. Even if they did make a mistake and used exceesive force, I am not so sure that it is wise to protest against every mistake.

I seem to be the only one who cares that the kid walked around nude in this place. The security guard said (on another video) that he asked the kid to get dressed because women would be coming in and that it was a Synagogue and one can’t walk around nude. The kid put his pants on and went to sleep. Is it common custom for men to walk around nude at this location?

the original article clearly states that the victim had mental issues. that said, many of his actions are understandable — not excusable. That said, a police officer, knowing he is coming to a location that does have people with mental issues — or even if he didn’t know it he should have tried to get as much info about the victim and the location prior to confronting the man sleeping on couch.
The pummeling was certainly not necessary. It is an example where with numbers you will usually get the victim to cooperated. if this were to be a African American center. the police officer never would have done what he did.
