Thompson, 46, has been linked to some high profile cases in his career, including those involving Abner Louima and Nafissatou Diallo. He won a conviction against the police officer who beat and tortured Mr. Louima, and still has a civil case pending in the Bronx against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Ms. Diallo’s alleged attacker.

In an interview with The New York Times (http://bit.ly/R8cqk9), Thompson said his motivation for running is to help “get the guns off the streets in Brooklyn.” He has already secured the endorsement of Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries.

As previously reported on VIN, Abe George, 34, a former Manhattan assistant district attorney, has also signaled his intention to challenge Mr. Hynes. He has accused Mr. Hynes of “playing politics,” particularly as it relates to prosecuting political adversaries and for failing to investigate
allegations of sexual abuse in Brooklyn’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.

Mr. Hynes did not comment on the upcoming race except to say that he intended to run for re-election.
