Syria – In the wake of continued fighting between Syrian rebels and regime members, questions have surfaced regarding the status of the Great Synagogue of Aleppo, and whether the 1,500-year-old structure has survived intact amid the ongoing violence. A basilica, the oldest part of the synagogue, has its origins in the 5th or 6th century CE, when Aleppo was still under Byzantine rule. Local lore claims the building’s foundation was laid by King David’s general, Yoav, who captured Aleppo.

The Times of Israel reports (http://bit.ly/V5VwZ1) that Aleppo, once a trading center for Muslims, Armenians and Syrian Christians, was also home to one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities. The synagogue was used as recently as two decades ago until Aleppo’s remaining Jews left. The Great Synagogue, as well as other Jewish sites, including cemeteries, schools and communal properties, is presently under government auspices.
Wow, what a history. Probably the oldest standing Shule accross the globe!
This alone should enlighten (doubt) our muslim cousins that not only does this 1500 year old edifice predate their faith by about 100 years, but certainly Judaism in general, predates their religion.
e.g. There can be no doubt that we Jews were in Israel and surrounding areas way before their religion was even dreamt up.
It would be tragic if anything befell it!!
