BrooklynNews.com (http://bit.ly/Xv1VvA) is reporting that the new bill—S. 2503, sponsored by State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn)—increases the penalties for reckless drivers.

The penalty for drivers leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage, without stopping and/or reporting it changes from a Class A Misdemeanor to a Class E Felony. For repeat offenders causing property damage or personal injury, the charges are now increased from a Class E to a Class D Felony.

Drivers fleeing an accident resulting in a fatality now face a Class C Felony.

Senator Golden commended his senate colleagues for passing the bill, but cautioned that it is now in the hands of the State Assembly.

“It is time to get serious about making sure that reckless drivers, who take innocent lives and destroy families, face the strictest penalties,” said Golden. “Each day the State Assembly fails to act, it is another day that New Yorkers are walking, jogging, and riding their nikes in danger.”

Assemblyman Steve Cymbrowitz (D-Brooklyn) is the sponsor of the Assembly bill, A.1533.

Problem is always the illegal immigrants. They run because they have no papers, no money & do t want to lose their job. Fact proven time & time again.

Politicians with too much time on their hands. There are laws already in place, how will this make us safer. More regulation means more headaches for the regular folks.
