Some of the world’s leading Chazzanim paid tribute through song, accompanied by Izchak Haimov and the Hampton Synagogue Choir. The evening began with words of inspiration and Hesped from Alan J. Gerber, a close friend to the late Chazzan.

The Chazzanim then each presented a musical piece. Those who participated in this event included Zevi Muller, Benzion Miller, Pini Ben Ari, Netanel Hershtik, Benny Rogosnitzky, Yaakov Rosenfeld, Ushi Blumberg, Sid Dworkin, Asher Scharf, Robert Vegh, and Shimmy Miller. They were accompanied on piano by Daniel Gildar.

The evening culminated with a stirring rendition of “Kel Moley Rachamim” by Chazzan Benzion Miller, who was a close friend of the late Chazzan.

Event organizer Cantor Benny Rogosnitzky of Park East Synagogue said, “Last night, we were all one family, mourning the loss of one of the greatest cantors of our generation and paying tribute in the most meaningful way possible — through music and Tefillah.”

Charlie Bernhaut, who emceed the tribute, said, “It was an honor for me and Benny to be involved with this most stirring and appropriate memorial gathering for our friend, Cantor Moshe Schulhof. Each participating cantor sang ‘from the heart’ – an evening of true soul music, and those who attended were most respectful and appreciative.”

Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 151 Mishna Berura 34, that if it was agreed when a shul was built that it would also be used for other purposes, such a t’nai permits everything except eating and drinking and disrespectful activities. American synagogues built in that period assumed there would be cantorial concerts, and therefore it is a T’nai. In this case there was probably also a Dvar Torah. Mishna Berura also explains (op. cit. 10) that if there is a hesped of a relative of a great person which will draw a large crowd, one can hold the hesped in a shul. So, poskim clearly sanction it.

#2 , can you point to any source against it? There is no basis for disallowing it. Shloshim is a hesped, without the niftar present. The fact that they add chazanus doesn’t take away from that. And even the chazanus alone is fine, as it is tefila.

Moshe was a dear friend of mine for over 30 years, I shared the most trying of times and the best of times with Moshe, his wife & children. Moshe was not only an outstanding chazan he was an unbelievable person, the world was a better place with Moshe Schulhof. We will miss him. May he be a Maletz Yosher for his beautiful family and all of Klal Yisrael, the same way he was a wonderful Shaliach Tzibor for so many of us over the years.
