New York – The New York State Democratic Committee is coming under fire after sending out an ill-conceived letter to constituents promising retribution if they don’t show up at the polls next Tuesday.

NYPOST.com (http://bit.ly/1ucP83D) reports that the letter, which party members began receiving Wednesday, contains intimidating messages, like, “Who you vote for is your secret. But whether or not you vote is public record” and “We will be reviewing voting records . . . to determine whether you joined your neighbors who voted in 2014.”
According to committee records, the letter was sent to over one million registered New York Democrats who didn’t vote during the last mid-term elections in 2010.
One political insider said that even members inside the party are critical of the letter, which he called “unnecessary and inappropriate.”
Recipients of the letter in Manhattan and Brooklyn echoed that sentiment, with one anonymous recipient calling it “ludicrous and menacing.”
A committee spokesman, Peter Kauffmann, defended the letter, saying it’s “part of a nationwide response” to tactics used by Republicans to enact “voter-suppression.”
